Russian-born Pavel Durov, founder and CEO of Telegram, was arrested at Le Bourget airport outside Paris on August 24 and released on five-million-euro bail after four days of detention.

Conditionally he has to stay in France and report to the police station twice a week. Commenting for the first time since his arrest, Durov called the situation misguiding and surprising.

Durov, meanwhile, announced new initiatives to enhance security on its messaging app. They are mainly designed to combat illegal content, bots and scammers. The announcement comes a week after his arrest when he was under investigation related to illegal content on the platform.

Pavel Durov said the Telegram app may not be perfect, but he in no way linked it to intentional fraud. He said, ‘Some media are writing that Telegram is a paradise for crooks, which is completely untrue. We remove millions of harmful posts and channels every day.’
