Xiaomi has reportedly begun developing its own chipset, aiming to reduce reliance on Qualcomm and MediaTek, according to GSM Arena. Production of the chipset is expected to commence in 2025, with the first Xiaomi smartphone powered by it anticipated to launch the same year.
The decision aligns with the Chinese government’s push for local companies to minimize dependence on foreign technology. Xiaomi’s initiative underscores its commitment to this directive by embarking on an ambitious chipmaking project.
Details about the chip’s target segment and its performance compared to competitors like Qualcomm and MediaTek remain undisclosed.
Xiaomi has also announced plans to allocate ¥30 billion (approximately $4.1 billion) for research and development in 2025, a significant increase from ¥24 billion ($3.3 billion) in 2024. A substantial portion of this budget is expected to fund the chip development process.
