Romania’s telecommunications regulatory body will begin the process of temporarily suspending TikTok starting Thursday, pending the conclusion of an investigation into the platform’s role during the first round of the country’s presidential election held on Sunday, Reuters reports.
In a statement to the media outlet Profit.ro, Pavel Popescu, the deputy head of the regulatory authority, stated, “I am calling for TikTok to be suspended in Romania starting November 28 until the investigation into manipulation of the electoral process is completed. I will officially initiate this process tomorrow.”
Details of the investigation remain unclear, but Romania’s government and various agencies are reportedly monitoring TikTok’s involvement closely.
Experts suggest this move is a significant step toward ensuring transparency and impartiality in the country’s electoral process. The suspension reflects broader concerns about the potential misuse of social media platforms in influencing democratic proceedings. Source: Reuters
