Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) seized 42,150 SIM cards from Dhaka and Chattogram between October 14 and November 1 and also arrested 24 people on charge of running Illegal VoIP operations.
The telecom regulator along with members of Rapid action Battalion (RAB) conducted 23 drives in the two cities and seized equipment worth Tk 1.23 crore.
BTRC came up with the information at a press conference at its conference room on Sunday (Nov 11).
It was said these SIM cards and equipment were used for illegally routing international calls through voice over internet protocol (VoIP), which causes a huge loss to the public fund.
Of the SIMs, 16,812 were of Robi and Airtel; 15,939 were of Teletalk; 6,176 of Banglalink and 3,233 of Grameenphone, officials at BTRC said.
The authorities also have filled 28 cases on this connection under Telecommunication Act 2001.
In the press conference, BTRC acting chairman Md Jahiraul Haque said they are trying to control the termination of international calls.
Haque said: “Now, we are using latest technology to determine illegal transmission of the international calls.”
